Nick the Nurse Shark (10/8/2012)
Finally a 'N animal' that I can post and end my self imposed theme of an animal a day for each letter of the alphabet. What a story this last picture has. I had originally planned to publish one of two N animal pictures I had already in the bad...or so I thought. The neon tetras I had snapped yesterday which upon inspection I didn't like the focus quality or the repetitive nature of another aquarium shot . The second option was a self portrait picture I took yesterday and used the Smithsonian iPhone application to turn myself into a Neanderthal. Unfortunately, the end result was only 256x360 big! So cursing my Monday luck, I headed off to the zoo early this morning for a picture of a naked mole rat, which I've seen there many times and as recently as last Friday. Well, the Houston zoo is rebuilding that area and the naked mole exhibit is closed. Next idea… What about a North American Black Bear? Well, after 5 trips around the bear area I discovered that exhibit closed over a year ago! Argh! Then the light dawned on me, a newt…. Well Mr. Emperor Newt didn't want to climb out from under the leaves and despite waiting 60 minutes for him to show, I had no luck. Rejected, angry and thinking how ending my series with a out of focus neon photo would suck; I walked into the aquarium area (a very small exhibit ) hopping on the off chance there would be another neon for me to photograph. To my astonishment they had two baby nurse sharks!!! Hurray! Never before have I been so happy to see a shark. LOL. While I'm not super pleased with this shot with it's reflection, high iso, late post and of course another aquarium shot it will work.
